Supportive Volunteering Pathways Project
The Supportive Volunteering Pathways Project aims to assist with the creation of a socially inclusive society in South West Victoria where all people feel valued, their differences respected and their basic needs, both physical and emotional, are met so they can live with dignity and are empowered by their participation and contribution. In particular, the project recognises that disability services should build opportunities for community involvement by people with a disability, and that people with disabilities should have the opportunity to build individual capacity in a manner consistent with their personal aspirations.
The project will work towards achieving specific objectives that will build the capacity of individuals, organisations and the volunteer sector across rural and regional South West Victoria.
Individuals
Objective 1 To enable people who are currently excluded from volunteering with opportunities to make a voluntary contribution in a meaningful activity which builds individual skills and social networks and improves self-confidence, self-esteem, coping effectiveness and mental health status.
Objective 2 To provide a rewarding experience for people who are currently excluded from volunteering opportunities, recognising that people with disabilities have a diverse range of skills and abilities but at the same time recognising the individual needs of those people, by providing a safe and supported framework designed to increase the successful participation of people with a disability in volunteering.
Volunteer-involving organisations
Objective 3 To assist volunteer-involving organisations to improve their inclusive practices and in doing so benefit from the challenging but rewarding process of adding to the cohesion of our community.
Objective 4 To strengthen the capacity of volunteer-involving organisations by adding to the number and diversity of their current and future volunteer pool.
Community service agencies
Objective 5 To evaluate the capacity of Community Southwest agencies to work collaboratively to deliver services and empower communities across the South West.
Objective 6 To improve the quality of services provided by community agencies to adults with disabilities and special needs by incorporating a new approach into clients’ case plans.
South West Victoria
Objective 7 To work towards a solution of a region wide shortage of volunteers by opening up an untapped market (people with a disability and special needs not presently engaged in a volunteering activity).
Objective 8 To strengthen the capacity of South West Victoria by building new and strengthening existing partnerships and relationships between organisations working together on this initiative.
Objective 9 To strengthen the capacity of the region’s volunteer sector by promoting and improving inclusive practices.
Objective 10 While recognising the challenges implicit in community building, to develop a whole of community approach to social inclusion in South West Victoria.
